I have been a one crew framing Busniess since 96. I have wore my tool belt since. Most of my work has been subbing from other builders. I have acquired my state building license a couple years ago. Every time I go a builders seeking advice to grow they offer for me to partner up for a salary.
I do better on my own but, want to learn how to grow. I now realize I need good people working for me, cannot do it all myself. Any thoughts or suggestions would be very appreciated.
    Thanks in advance, Manfred.

      Hi Manfred,
Thanks for the comment. It’s true that you can only grow so much if you’re still out in the field performing the labor yourself. You have to replace yourself with skilled workers so that you can spend your time on “business aspects”: marketing, networking, estimating, etc. Check out my post about getting rich with replication: http://www.richcontractor.com/my_weblog/2008/08/replication-is-the-key-to-getting-rich.html
Thanks and good luck out there!

We live in Western NC and finding good help is almost impossible. People want high pay and lie about their abilities, costing my business credibility. I would love to just run the business, but after going through many employees in the last 3 years I am stuck with fixing the problems on site and doing the work myself. The clients want me to do all the work because of my quality and understanding of all forms of construction. The social services and educational training is failing in providing what is necessary for a good work ethic.

        • Jeff April 7, 2017, 2:47 pm

Yeah there’s a shortage of skilled labor out there right now. I think what you have to do in some situations is just find the good ones, be willing to pay them well for their skills, and pass along the extra costs to the customers. The ones that can’t hang should be cut loose, but do whatever you can to hang onto the ones who are skilled and do good work. They are worth their weight in gold. Put ads in craigslist and anywhere else you can (including on your site/blog). Always be hiring/interviewing, that way you have a bigger pool to grab talent from.

    Hi Jeff,
I was surfing the internet about starting a contracting business and I dropped on this site. My background is IT and I have a MBA. I am in love with DIY projects, I also do many things in my house from electrical work, wood work, gypsum board, painting and a little of plumbing. I hope I can benefit from this site in order to start my very own business.
    Thank you.

      Hello Mohammad,
Given your background and range of skills I think you will find great success as a contractor. Since you already have computer skills you should have no trouble starting a blog and building a presence on the internet (which is very important), and of course the MBA already puts you miles ahead of most of your competition as far your understanding of business fundamentals. Be sure to check out my series about how and why to start a blog for your business: http://www.richcontractor.com/how-to-start-a-successful-blog-for-your-business/
Thanks for checking in and let me know what else I can help you with!

  • Carlverd Newton in Zimbabwe May 29, 2017, 9:53 am

    Hi Jeff

Quite happy to come across with your blog. Well, Am In Zimbabwe and am planning to register a construction company but would love to split it into several subsidiaries, ( driveway construction can stand as a subsidiary, plumbing as a subsidiary, renovation, etc), is this idea worthwhile proceeding with or I should just focus on one company doing all the works? Like I said I would like to register a parent company then split the services into subsidiaries then ending up having 5 or more divisions falling under one company.
